How Google Maps Ranking Works (and How to Rank Higher)

Local SEO guide for businesses in Rawalpindi and Islamabad showing a Google Maps listing

Google Maps ranks businesses mainly on three factors: relevance (how well your Business Profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the person searching) and prominence (how well known your business is, including reviews and links from other websites). Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. You improve it by making your profile more relevant and your business better known.

This guide explains each factor in plain terms, why two people searching the same words see different results, and the practical steps that move a business up in Google Maps in Rawalpindi, Islamabad or anywhere else in Pakistan. For hands-on help, see our local SEO service.

The three Google Maps ranking factors

Google’s own help page states that local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. Everything that helps or hurts a Google Maps ranking works through one of these three.

1. Relevance: does your profile match the search?

Relevance is how well a Business Profile matches what someone is looking for. Google reads your primary category, secondary categories, the services and products you list, your business description and your website. A dental clinic whose primary category is “Dentist” and whose profile lists “root canal treatment” and “teeth whitening” is a stronger match for those searches than one with a vague category and no services listed.

2. Distance: how close are you to the searcher?

Distance is how far your business is from the person searching, or from the location named in the search. Someone in Bahria Town Phase 7 searching “dentist near me” will usually see clinics in and around Phase 7 before better-known clinics in Saddar. You cannot change your distance from a customer, which is why your rank in Google Maps changes from one street to the next.

3. Prominence: how well known is your business?

Prominence is how well known a business is, both offline and online. Google says prominence is based on information such as how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Mentions in directories and local news, and your position in normal web results, also count.

Why does my Google Maps ranking look different on every phone?

Your Google Maps ranking looks different on every phone because distance is part of the calculation. The same search from DHA Phase 2 and from Saddar returns different businesses, and personal search history can shift results a little too. That is why checking your ranking only from your own office is misleading. A proper check searches from a grid of points across the area you serve and shows where you appear at each one.

How to rank higher on Google Maps

These steps follow Google’s own advice and what we see working for businesses in Rawalpindi and Islamabad:

  1. Verify your Business Profile. Unverified profiles rarely rank. Keep a name board at your premises, because video verification asks to see it.
  2. Pick the most accurate primary category. It describes what the business is, not everything it offers. You can add secondary categories for the rest.
  3. Complete every field. Hours, phone, website, services, products, attributes and a description written in plain language.
  4. Use your real business name. Adding keywords to the name breaks Google’s guidelines and can get the profile suspended. Our guide on fixing a suspended Google Business Profile covers what happens when it does.
  5. Earn reviews steadily and reply to them. Ask every happy customer, reply to every review, and never buy reviews.
  6. Add real photos and videos. Your premises, team and work, updated over time.
  7. Build a website that confirms your profile. A page for each service, the same name, address and phone as the profile, and your area named naturally in the text.
  8. Get mentioned elsewhere. Consistent listings in directories, local associations and partners’ websites add to prominence.

Things that do not improve your ranking

  • Paying Google. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads appear separately and are marked as sponsored.
  • Keywords in the business name. It may work briefly, then risks suspension.
  • A second profile for the same business. Duplicates break the guidelines and split your reviews.
  • Fake or bought reviews. Google removes them and can restrict the profile.

How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?

Most businesses see movement on Google Maps within two to three months after the profile and website problems are fixed. Competitive fields such as dentists, property dealers and lawyers in busy areas take longer, because many businesses are competing for the same searches in the same few streets.

Frequently asked questions

What are the three Google Maps ranking factors?+
Google names relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your Business Profile matches the search, distance is how far you are from the searcher, and prominence is how well known your business is, including reviews and links from other websites.
Can I pay Google to rank higher on Maps?+
No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. You can pay for Google Ads that appear in Maps, but they are labelled as sponsored and do not change your organic position.
Do Google reviews help my Maps ranking?+
Yes. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Replying to reviews also helps, and reviews that mention the service and area give Google more context about your business.
Why does my business rank well at my office but not elsewhere?+
Distance is a ranking factor, so results change with the searcher’s location. Your business can appear first near your office and lower a few kilometres away. A grid ranking check shows your position across your whole service area.
Does my website affect my Google Maps ranking?+
Yes. Google considers your position in web results as part of prominence, and a website that confirms your services, address and phone number makes your profile more relevant. Businesses with a strong website usually rank better in Maps than those without one.
