Technical SEO Basics: Crawling, Indexing and Speed
Technical SEO makes sure Google can crawl your website, index the right pages, and load them quickly on any device. It is the foundation under everything else. Good content on a site that Google cannot read properly will not rank.
You do not need to be a developer to understand the basics. This guide explains what each part is and how to check it.
Crawling: can Google reach your pages?
Google discovers pages by following links and reading your XML sitemap.
- XML sitemap: a file listing your important pages. Most WordPress SEO plugins create one automatically. Submit it in Google Search Console.
- robots.txt: a file that tells crawlers which areas to skip. One wrong line can block your whole site, so check it after any website change.
- Internal links: every important page should be linked from at least one other page, ideally from your menu or related pages.
Indexing: is Google storing the right pages?
Not every page should be indexed. Search results pages, thank-you pages and empty archives usually should not. Your service pages, location pages and articles should.
- Noindex tags keep pages out of Google. Make sure they are not on pages you want to rank.
- Canonical tags tell Google which version of a page is the main one when similar versions exist.
- Duplicate content, such as the same text on several area pages, can lead Google to index only one of them.
The Pages report in Google Search Console shows which pages are indexed and why others are not.
Redirects and broken pages
When you delete or rename a page, set up a 301 redirect from the old address to the most relevant new one. Otherwise visitors and Google hit an error page, and any value the old page had is lost. Check for broken links after every redesign.
Speed and Core Web Vitals
Google measures real user experience with Core Web Vitals:
| Metric | What it measures | Good score |
|---|---|---|
| LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) | How fast the main content appears | 2.5 seconds or less |
| INP (Interaction to Next Paint) | How quickly the page responds to taps and clicks | 200 milliseconds or less |
| CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) | How much the layout jumps while loading | 0.1 or less |
Common fixes: compress and resize images, use WebP, remove unused plugins and scripts, use good hosting, and set image sizes so the layout does not shift. You can test any page with Google PageSpeed Insights.
Mobile friendliness
Most local searches in Pakistan happen on phones, often on mobile data. Google uses the mobile version of your site for indexing. Check that text is readable without zooming, buttons are easy to tap and nothing is wider than the screen.
Security
Your site should load on HTTPS with a valid certificate on both the main address and the www version. A certificate error on www sends visitors to a warning screen. Keep WordPress, themes and plugins updated.
Structured data
Schema markup describes your business, services, articles and FAQs in a format search engines read directly. It does not guarantee rich results, but it removes guesswork.
A quick technical check you can do today
- Search “site:yourdomain.com” on Google and see roughly how many pages appear.
- Open your robots.txt at yourdomain.com/robots.txt and make sure it does not say “Disallow: /”.
- Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights on mobile.
- Open your site on your phone using mobile data.
- Try both www and non-www versions of your address.
