Service-Area Business vs Storefront on Google

Set up your Google Business Profile as a storefront if customers visit your address during business hours, and as a service-area business if you travel to customers instead. If you do both, show your address and also list the areas you serve. Choosing the wrong setup is one of the most common reasons Pakistani profiles get suspended, so it is worth getting right before you think about rankings.

What is a storefront business on Google?

A storefront business has a physical location that customers visit while it is staffed. Clinics, restaurants, salons, shops, schools and agencies with a reception all fit here. The address is shown on Google Maps, and customers can get directions to it.

What is a service-area business?

A service-area business goes to the customer. Plumbers, AC technicians, home tutors, mobile car detailers, pest control and many cleaning companies work this way. Google’s guidelines say service-area businesses should hide their address and instead list the areas they serve, such as Bahria Town, DHA Phase 2 or G-11.

Hybrid businesses

Some businesses do both. A solar installer might have a showroom on Murree Road that customers visit and also send teams to homes across Rawalpindi. A hybrid business shows its address, keeps hours when the location is staffed, and adds service areas.

How each setup affects your ranking

Distance is one of Google’s three local ranking factors. For a storefront, Google measures distance from your address. For a service-area business, Google still uses the location behind the profile, even though it is hidden. Listing service areas tells customers where you work, but it does not mean you will rank everywhere you list.

That is why a plumber based in Bahria Town Phase 7 will usually rank well nearby and less well in Saddar, no matter how many areas are added. To reach further, service-area businesses rely more on their website, with useful pages for each main area and service. Our guide to how Google Maps ranking works explains the distance factor in more detail.

Address mistakes that cause suspensions

  • Showing a home address as a storefront when customers never visit.
  • Using a virtual office or mail-only address. Google does not allow these unless the office is staffed during business hours.
  • Listing a co-working desk you rarely use.
  • Creating several profiles at different addresses to appear in more areas when you do not have staffed locations there.

If one of these has already caused a suspension, start with our guide to fixing a suspended Google Business Profile in Pakistan.

How many service areas should you add?

Add the areas you genuinely serve, using city names or well-known areas. Keep it realistic. Twenty distant cities do not make a Rawalpindi technician rank in Lahore, and they make the profile look less trustworthy. For most local service businesses, the main city plus the key areas around it is enough.

Where your website comes in

Because a service-area business cannot rely on a visible address, its website does more work. A strong page for each service, real photos of jobs in named areas and consistent contact details all help. Frequently asked questions

Can I use my home address on Google Business Profile?+
Yes, but if customers do not visit your home, set up as a service-area business and hide the address. Showing a home address as a storefront when nobody comes there breaks Google’s guidelines.
Do service-area businesses rank lower on Google Maps?+
Not necessarily. Google still uses the location behind the profile for distance, so you can rank well near your base. Ranking far from that base is harder for any business, which is why a strong website matters more for service-area businesses.
How do I change my profile from storefront to service-area?+
In your Business Profile, edit the location settings to remove or hide the address and add your service areas. Make the change carefully, because large edits can trigger re-verification.
Can I have a profile for each area I serve?+
Only if you have a real, staffed location in each area. Creating profiles for areas where you have no staffed premises breaks Google’s guidelines and often leads to suspension.
